Cofferdam Installation For Underwater Repair

A cofferdam creates a temporary watertight enclosure directly against the hull — pumped dry so your team can weld, repair, and inspect without drydocking. Repairs done right at the dock, in days.

How Do Cofferdams Work?

Cofferdams are commonly constructed using steel sheet piles driven into the seabed.

“These interlocking sheets circle the repair area and are sealed with packed clay or concrete,”

“We then pump out the water so our divers can access the dry, sealed space.”

Once the cofferdam is installed, divers conduct detailed inspections and require repairs ranging from small corrosion patches to shaft replacements. Hoses provide air and electricity, while suction hoses remove debris and sediment.

Trident, with its extensive experience in underwater maintenance, ensures that every aspect of the repair work adheres to the highest standards of safety and efficiency. Our divers are equipped with state-of-the-art tools and follow a meticulous process to ensure thorough inspections and precise repairs.

When Are Cofferdams The Right Solution?

For major repairs involving structural reinforcements, dry docks are still preferred. Proper planning is critical to ensure cofferdam installation and repair work proceed smoothly.

How Trident Helps

Why Cofferdam Works — Built Around Five Principles

Safe

Provides a secure and stable working environment

Dry Workspace

Keeps water out so internal works can be carried out safely and efficiently

Verstile Application

Suitable for welding, steel renewal, inspection, piping works and more

Efficient

Minimises delays and improves project efficiency

Environmentally Responsible

Helps contain debris and reduces environmental impact during repairs

Advantages Over Dry Docking

For minor routine repairs, cofferdam installation is far more economical than dry docking enormous vessels.

"It eliminates the need to transport ships to a different facility. Repairs can be completed right at the dock."

  • Eliminates the need to move the vessel to a separate facility
  • Cofferdams install in days compared to weeks for dry docks

Stay Compliant. Stay Operational.

Proactive hull maintenance ensures smooth port entry — every time.
